The N.Y. Mets clinched their fourth trip to the World Series by beating the Chicago Cubs in Game 4 of the National League Championship Series, 8-3, Wednesday night at Wrigley Field.

Daniel Murphy’s 7 HR are 1 shy of record for a single postseason Barry Bonds (2002), Carlos Beltran (2004), Nelson Cruz (2011) had 8

Meanwhile, in the American League Championship Series, the Kansas City Royals couldn’t put away the Toronto Blue Jays, losing Game 5, 7-1, earlier Wednesday.

Sure, the Mets are still four wins away from winning the World Series, and the Royals haven’t even gotten in yet, but I thought checking out their preseason odds would have been fun.

At the end of Spring Training just a few months ago, the odds of the N.Y. Mets or Kansas City Royals winning the 2015 World Series were the same – 33/1, according to OddsShark.com.

It’s interesting to look at how their odds fluctuated over the past year, since the Royals lost to the San Francisco Giants in the 2014 World Series. The Mets’ odds were worse (40/1) as of October 30, and the Royals’ odds were better (16/1). But offseason maneuvers and the ascension of prospects caused their odds to converge at 33/1 as of March 28.

Both teams had the same odds of winning the 2015 World Series as the Baltimore Orioles, Miami Marlins and N.Y. Yankees. The Toronto Blue Jays (25/1) had a little better odds, but the Chicago Cubs were surprisingly only 16/1 odds after the signing of Jon Lester, trade for Dexter Fowler and the assumed early promotion of Kris Bryant.

15 Teams With the Same Tough Odds as the Royals and Mets

So I thought it would be fun to take a look at some of the other odds of upcoming events that we can compare to the long road to possible riches for both the Mets and Royals.

Super Bowl 50 Champions

There are a dozen teams with better odds to win Super Bowl 50 this season than the Mets had to win the 2015 World Series. But only one team had the same odds:

  • N.Y. Giants

Ironically, I’ve always had the understanding that most Mets fans were also Jets fans – and the Jets odds of winning are even better than the Giants, at 25/1.

2015-16 College Football FBS Championship

Depending on the sports book you look at, here are the college football teams with similar odds (33/1) as the Mets and Royals midway through this season:

  • Oklahoma State Cowboys
  • USC Trojans
  • Texas A&M Aggies

None of these teams rank inside the AP’s top 10 currently, although, the Cowboys and Aggies are both ranked inside the top 15. But the 3-3 Trojans!?! When was the last time a team with three losses won the national championship? How about all the way back to – never?

2015-16 NBA Championship

Know that different sportsbooks put different futures odds, so some might have teams at 33/1, while others have them at 50/1. The new NBA season is about to tip off – and here are the teams with just as good a chance as handicappers thought the Mets and Royals had (33/1):

  • Atlanta Hawks
  • Memphis Grizzlies
  • Miami Heat
  • New Orleans Pelicans
  • Toronto Raptors
  • Washington Wizards

The Hawks made a serious run in the regular season last year, earning the top seed in the playoffs, and the Grizzlies, Pelicans, Raptors and Wizards all made the playoffs last season. But the Heat finished 10th in the Eastern Conference with a 37-45 record. LeBron James is not taking his talents back to South Beach any time soon.

2016 NCAA Tournament Champions

With 33/1 odds, these teams are pretty much predicted to be No. 5 seeds when March Madness rolls around.

  • LSU Tigers
  • Oklahoma Sooners

The Sooners are ranked eighth in the USA Today Coaches Poll, with the Bayou Bengals checking in at 19. Neither team got one first-place vote.

2015-16 Stanley Cup Champions Futures

The hockey season is a couple weeks in, and here are the teams with the same 33/1 odds as the Mets and Royals right now:

  • Calgary Flames
  • Ottawa Senators
  • Vancouver Canucks

What’s up with the Canadian teams!?! I can understand Ottawa and Vancouver, but the Flames? They currently sit at the bottom of the Western Conference with just two points. Only the winless Columbus Blue Jackets have fewer points in the entire league.

After seeing all of these teams in relation to their sports and their current standing in those sports, it should make this run by the Mets, and possibly the Royals, that much more impressive.
